Theatre On Skates Academy was created in 1991 by its director, Michael Orr, by teaching the fundamentals of figure skating in Mexico City, Mexico. Three years later the company relocated to the United States to manage the very first minority based figure skating program of 1986 in Detroit, Michigan (Renaissance Figure Skaters Club).

In 1996, the company produced its very first ice show production, "A Music Awards On Ice" then later produced more than 15 productions of "Winter and Summer Classics On Ice" through its creation of the Motor City Skating Academy along with other annual show productions such as "External link opens in new tab or windowUnder New Skies" and "The Magic of Fire & Ice".

In 2007, the company outreached its mission to form the Theatre On Ice Academy of Illinois (TOI), an organization designed to educate the core disciplines of theatre performance and becoming a part of a theatrical company. With its main focus on the youth community, performances were held in Highland Park, Winetka, Vernon Hills, Bensenville and Franklin Park, Illinois.

Today the company is incorporated in the state of Illinois, as a non-profit organization, in the midst of a thriving densely-populated cosmopolitan community, seeking the assistance from others in outreaching to a broader community and audience to continue its vision.
